United States Senate, 1906. Very Good. (Senate Expulsion Case of Reed Smoot). Proceedings Before the Committee on Privileges and Elections of the United States Senate in the matter of the Protests Against the Right of Hon. Reed Smoot, a Senator from the State of Utah, to Hold His Seat. Washington, D.C.: United States Senate, 1906. Volume IV. 257pp. 8vo. Stapled wraps. Book condition: Very good with lightly bumped edges, a few small stains, and tiny, faint spots. A couple of pages slightly yellowed, not affecting text. An important case in U.S. history. Despite public outcry against a Mormon leader taking office in the U.S. Senate based on fears that Smoot's only loyalty was to the church, the Committee on Privileges and Elections ultimately decided to uphold freedom of religion. Smoot kept his Senate seat.
