Wilson's diaries and letters show that he and Troxell were friends for decades and that Wilson relied on Troxell for "New Haven gossip."

The letter states (in 12 lines): "My Dear Troxell: I have been much disturbed to hear that you have recently consigned Mr. Edmund Wilson to Hell. On the contrary, I must let you know that I have just decided to turn over to him the direction of the universe. All prayers offered up to Me after the first day of March will be null and void. I hope that you will obey Mr. Wilson's commandments as conscientiously as you have Mine. Yours omnipotently, God."
