Based on the 1880 novel by Lew Wallace. Jewish prince Ben-Hur is sent to prison at the behest of his childhood friend Messala as a result of a mishap during a Roman parade. Through sheer will, Ben-Hur endures hard labor and slavery in prison and, once released, vows revenge on Messala. The most expensive film ever made at the time of its release, with a 15 million dollar budget and a massive, elaborate set. Nominated for 12 Academy Awards and winning 11, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor.
