American symbolist artist Elihu Vedder (1836-1923) was born in New York City. He spent a vast portion of his life in Rome, and went on to become one of the most imaginative American expatriate painters of the second half of the nineteenth century. His reputation is founded primarily on paintings derived from dreams and fantasies which often evoke a sense of melancholy. The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, which so supremely demonstrates his imaginative style, is his most famous work.
