Banks was a British legal scholar known for assisting claimants to dormant peerages, many of whose claims were flimsy at best and fraudulent at worst. This work, written in support of Alexander Humphrys's claim to the earldom of Stirling, falls into the latter category. Banks was apparently committed enough to Humphrys's cause to allow Humphrys to create him a baronet in Nova Scotia, but stopped using the title when the documents on which Humphrys's claim had relied turned out to be forgeries.
