Cyril Connolly writes of Apollinaire: "By-passing Mallarme, Apollinaire returned to simpler and fresher forms in the style of Laforgue--and Villon. His imagery is dazzling, his vitality prodigious, his poetry, like Eliot's, both memorable and musical." The author died in 1918, two years after the publication of this novel.
