United States, 1880. Very good to fine. Two small short tears to right-hand margin, not affecting image.. Original photograph of two dozen or so men in rural America participating in a barn raising in the late nineteenth century. A barn raising was when male members of the community would gather to build (or rebuild) a barn for one of their own, who would go on to help another with their barn raising, and so on. Illustrates strong fraternal bonds and gender roles in agricultural settings at this time. Photograph measures 3.25" by 4.25", and has been affixed to a thick blue card measuring 6" by 6.75
