The second stanza of Bryant's poem "The Battle-Field" in the poet's hand, SIGNED "William Cullen Bryant" and dated by him at the conclusion on a 5" x 8" sheet of paper. Bryant, who was a founder of the Republican Party and fervent supporter of Abraham Lincoln, commemorates the Civil War dead:

Ah, never shall the land forget
How gushed the life blood of her brave
Gushed warm with hope and courage yet
Upon the soil they fought to save.
