This is the third novel in which Lansdale features his charactors Hap and Leonard. Hap's girlfriend goes missing after investigating her ancestry back to a town dominated by the Klu Klux Klan in order to find some lost jazz tapes. Hap realizes the police are bigoted after pleading with them to investigate, which he realizes is due to her blackness.
