Maps are tinted. Gisborne, a British engineer went to Ireland in 1842 as a resident engineer to improve the navigability of the Shannon River, deepening and rebuilding bridges. Later he worked on the Upper Shannon and was appointed Engineer in Chief. He died in 1861 at the early age of thirty-eight.
