This is an account of the Dickinson family lineage associated with early American Puritan colonist Nathaniel Dickinson and his family line. Published on the occassion of the August 1883 family reunion in Amherst Massachusetts, known as "The Great Reunion" among scholars that featured "…over 400 Dickinsons, from many branches and from around the country, gathered at College Hall on the Amherst College campus for a long and illustrious program, with many notable speakers. The president for the reunion was M. F. Dickinson of Boston, the secretary and treasurer was Franke W. Dickinson of Springfield, Mass., the recording secretary was Edward B. Dickinson of New York, and there were 32 vice presidents."*

The book includes essays, hymns, addresses, poetry, a fold-out family ancestery chart between pages 160 and 161, a family photograph at page 92, and an appendix with information about notable members of the family as well as a memoriam. Included in the appendix on pages 188-189 is a biographical sketch of the Hon. Edward Dickinson (b.1803 - d.1874), the father of Emily Dickinson who would have been fifty-two at the time and whose poetry was still unknown. Though it isn't substanitated some researchers believe she may be among the assembled in the collective family portrait although her letters of the period say nothing about the reunion.
