Grantland Rice (b.1880 - d.1954), American sportswriter and journalist, born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He attended Vanderbilt University (BA in classics/ 1901) and he played on the football team and was captain of the baseball team; he also served as the coach of the baseball team in 1908. Grantland Rice is also the author of a book of poetry, Songs of the Stalwart, which was published in 1917 (by D. Appleton and Company). He was inducted into the Vanderbilt Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010.
