A melodramma in four parts to an anonymous libretto after Alessandro Manzoni ’s novel, I promessi sposi was first performed in Cremona at the Teatro della Concordia on 30 August 1856 and later in a revised version in Milan at the Teatro Dal Verme on 5 December 1872.
