Octavo; three-quarter gilt-decorated white-dyed calf over marbled boards, with leather spine titles; 103,186,154pp; printed in double columns, original wrappers discarded by the binder. Bookplate to front pastedown of Charles Olmsted Hall (1832-1893), an American-born resident of Nice, father of the California artist-author George Eli Hall. A tight, clean and unmarked volume, very well-preserved.
Continental reprintings (i.e., piracies) of three exceedingly minor English novels. Of these, "Peregrine Scramble" by the declassé English naval captain-cum-literateur Howard Vere Huntley is perhaps the best known; it is characterized in DNB as "an obvious and very feeble imitation of Captain [Frederick] Marryat." All three titles are quite unusual in their Continental versions, here done-up in an attractive contemporary French binding.
