An anonymous work by the French novelist, translator, and chemist, preceding her best known work Essay on the History of Putrefaction (1766), a study of plant and animal matter rot embarked upon to better understand gangrene. This work discusses love and ambition, their dangers in excess, and the importance of friendships for measured thinking and behavior.
