Garden City NY: Doubleday, Doran and Company, Inc.. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. 1943. First Edition. Hardcover. [light shelfwear, minor bump to lower front corner, vintage bookseller's label (John G. Kidd & Son, Cincinnati) on front pastedown; the jacket is edgeworn (especially along the top edge, where there is a short closed tear and some associated creasing), with some scuffing to the front panel]. "This novel, about the world of hot jazz, is written out of the experiences of a young man who played drums in many small bands himself. It tells, with a hard, biting realism, the story of a jazz musician's attempted compromise with commercialism, love, and the music that drove him with a rocking, relentless beat." The setting is the "Union Garden," a tawdry nightclub in Kansas City. This was the author's first novel, as well as the initial (and scarcest) book in what's been called a trilogy, followed as it was by two more, also about jazz musicians in the Midwest: "The Wild Faun" (1945) and "Little Boy Blues" (1947). .
