Now colleges in the 50's were completely different than most universities today, think of those very strict rules in the movie Mona Lisa Smile. There was a definite curfew, ladies and gentle men needed permission to leave the college campus, and there were assigned lunch tables and positively no drunkenness. Julie Sheldon is a freshmen and she has a mad crush on Greg, the college football hero who is a rake and a shameless flirt. He does not notice Julie at first but he sure does regard Julie's roommate Fran, a rather aloof, confident unfriendly girl. Julie struggles with her feelings of jealousy toward Fran and her frustration with the college boys who never seem to notice her with the exception of one man. He is an older student with a decided limp and when he and Julie share a dance she feels everyone's stare upon her as her partner, Tim, is hampered from smoothly whisking her around the floor. Julie and Tim begin a sweet friendship that actually is much more to Tim than to her. Tim is exceptional in every way except he is just not Greg, Julie's ideal man and this is the struggle that Julie must wage, who does she really want as her steady guy.
