Lubitsch emigrated from Germany to Hollywood in 1922, and shortly thereafter signed a three-year, six-picture contract with Warner Brothers. Although the resultant films— "The Marriage Circle" (1924), "Lady Windermere's Fan" (1925), and "So This Is Paris" (1926)—established the director's reputation for stylish, sophisticated comedies, the films only earned a marginal profit, and Lubitsch's contract was cut short by mutual agreement, with MGM and Paramount buying out the remainder.
