With light rubbing to the extremities, two small moisture stains to the top edge of the text blocks, and very occasional and minor notations in pencil. In dust jackets which are torn in half (front dj flap of volume II detached as well). The jacket of volume II is missing the spine. Frontispieces of John D. Lee and Mountain Meadows. Brooks' monumental two volume work on the diaries of John D. Lee, which derived from her earlier work on the Mountain Meadows Massacre, and led to her later full blown biography on Lee.
Volume I has been inscribed by both Cleland and Brooks: "Inscribed, with sincere appreciation, to ______ by Robert G. Cleland, December 7, 1955"; "Concurred in most heartily- Juanita Brooks, Sept. 24, 1958."
Tucked in, is a letter addressed to Mrs. Winifred Gregory and Eleanor Towler from editor Robert G. Cleland on his letterhead. In the letter, Cleland thanks the women for helping in the publication of these journals. He closes the letter playfully, by signing it "Jno D. Lee, Aggatha Ann, Old Mrs. Woolsey, et al."
Also tucked in- a photo of John D. Lee's grave, and an estimate, on University of New Mexico letterhead (5/10/76), of the cost involved in publishing 3 volumes of Lee's Diaries.
