A mathematical treatise by the West Point graduate who served as a professor of mathematics at several institutions. He is known for his 1856 work Liberty and Slavery, in which he defended the institution of slavery. He later served as an officer in the Confederate Army, and contributed to the Lost Cause mythology following the American Civil War. Aside from these dubious distinctions, this work is one of the earliest American works on mathematics, and includes chapters on Descartes, Leibnitz, and Newton.
