Albumen stereoview [9 1/4 cm x 15 cm] on a yellow mount [10 cm x 18 cm] Geographical and Geographical Explorations and Surveys West of the 100th Meridian backstamp. Printed label on the reverse. Expedition of 1872. The walls are of limestone and about 2,500 feet in height.

William Bell, who had established a studio in Philadelphia, was commissioned in 1872 by Lieutenant George Wheeler to accompany him as a photographer on an expedition into Arizona. Later, he worked as a photographer for the Pennsylvania railroad and with an expedition to Patagonia. (from Getty Museum).
