Uncommon lecture on humanity's innate drive towards excellence and how to achieve it: "Excellence may be obtained, first, by an estimation of our powers; and secondly, by calling up before our minds the motive naturally urging these powers of exertion (p. 6). The author, Tristam Burges (1770-1853), later became a member of the Rhode Island General Assembly and then served as United States Representative from Rhode Island from 1825 to 1835.
