Author and playwright de Alarcon had enlisted in the Spanish army following a failed production in 1857; he wrote this important account of the Spanish military campaigns in Morocco in 1859-60. The peace treaty established the permanent cession of the enclaves of Ceuta and Mellila to Spain.
This eyewitness account covers the period from 17 December 1859 through the preparation of a draft treaty in March 1860 (it was signed in April), with an extensive appendix dated 1 July 1860.
