[Albumen Photograph] Group of 9th US Cavalry Regiment Officers stationed at Fort Robinson in Crawford, Nebraska, including John Hanks Alexander
- Crawford, Nebraska: C.C. McBride, 1893
Crawford, Nebraska: C.C. McBride, 1893. Very Good. Crawford, NE: C.C. McBride, [ca. 1893]. Original albumen photograph (16.75 x 21.5cm.) affixed to tan printed card mount (20 x 25 cm.). Light edgewear and toning to card mount; moderate fading to photograph; overall Very Good.
Rare photograph featuring John Hanks Alexander, the second African-American to graduate from West Point, after Henry Ossian Flipper, and the first to hold a regular command position in the U.S. Armed Forces. Alexander is shown among his fellow officers of the Ninth Cavalry, a segregated regiment which was stationed at Fort Robinson in the late 1880s and 1890s and popularly referred to as "Buffalo Soldiers." Colonel Biddle's presence front and center dates this photograph between 1891 and 1896, and the presence of Alexander narrows it to before March, 1894, when he died in Ohio
A similar, possibly earlier photograph is found at History Nebraska, and a cabinet card of Alexander sold at auction in 2020, constituting only a handful of known photographs of this Black military pioneer.
