An early silent actress for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Shearer was one of the few actresses whose career survived both the transition to talkies at the end of the 1920s as well as the transition to Hayes Code-approved films in 1934. Shearer was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress on six occasions, winning only once, for "The Divorcee" (1930).
