Clayton Eshleman's copy with his ownership signature, dated 1966 in Lima on the title page. Eshleman (1935-2021), poet, translator, and editor, was an important figure for decades in the world of postmodern poetry. He won the National Book Award for his translations of the Peruvian modernist Cesar Vallejo. He discovered Vallejo's work in 1958, and started translating the Poemas Humanos in 1962, moving to Lima to live and work on his translations from 1964-1968.
