Little is known of the life and career of August D. Turner (d. 1919), who worked as a portraitist and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The large and dynamic paintings of fish for Johnson’s work are his chief legacy.
Few completes sets of the suite of twelve plates have survived. The present plates are UNRECORDED. Reuter p. 722; for Johnson, cf. Wetzel p. 166 “sumptuous”; Bruns B-33 “Of extreme rarity with the plates, bringing any price”; Heckscher 1129
