Translated from the Swedish by the renowned Swedish-American poet May Swenson; she also penned the five-page-long preface to this work. Swenson was "born of Swedish parents in Utah, she spoke Swedish as her first language. She brings this heritage to her superb translation (quoted from the dust jacket copy)." Indeed, Swenson's translation won a medal from the International Poetry Forum in the year it was published.

A remarkable poet and translator, Tomas Transtromer (1931 - 2015) was also a psychologist who worked with addicts, convicts, and disabled people. Transtromer won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2011.
