With "1867" at foot of backstrip. Black endpapers. With 8 pages of publisher's adverts at the front. There is a thin frayed loss to the cloth at the head of the backstrip, and there is a small stain to the surface of the backstrip. The front free endpaper has a contemporary gift inscription. There is a small ink stamp on the first page of the text. Swinburne (1837-1909) was one of the most successful lyric poets of the Victorian era and was a leading symbol of rebellion against the conservative values of his time.
