In a hotel room in Sancerre, France, the body of one Emile Gallet has been discovered, seemingly the victim of a murder. However, Detective Jules Maigret is on the case, and what he finds is a tangled web of deceit, blackmail, and stolen identities.
This novel has been adapted three times in the last six decades starting with a French adaptation under the title "Monsieur Gallet, décédé" (1956), directed by Jean Faucher with Henri Norbert as Det. Maigret. The novel also received an English adaptation, "A Man of Quality" (1960), staring Rupert Davies. It was later featured in the French television series as "Monsieur Gallet, décédé" (1987), directed by Jean-Marie Coldefy with Jean Richard in the lead role.
