Quarto (9" x 11-1/2") in publisher's gilt-decorated morocco leather, with modern rebacking retaining most of the original spine and tinted lithographic title page with onlaid collotype photographic portrait of Sir Bartle Frere, the book's patron; [x], 56 pages with 50 stiff card leaves containing 100 collotypes mounted as pairs on rectos and versos. The photographer, Robert Harris of Port Elizabeth, captured views of all the major South African cities and towns as well as views in Mozambique, Zanzibar, and Zululand. Among the subjects are diamond fields, people, and landscapes.
