Bradford's works of fiction and folklore were based on his childhood contacts with African-American preachers, musicians, and storytellers in his father's plantations. Ol' Man Adam An' His Chillun, is his first book and was collected from stories first published in the World. The stories were then adapted by Marc Connelly into the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Green Pastures. Bradford also wrote novels which depicted the plight of African-Americans from a historical perspective.
