Dunn began his career as a stage actor, landing a lead on Broadway in 1929's "Sweet Adeline." His Broadway performance led to him getting signed as a player for Twentieth Century Fox in 1931. He did a number of his best-known films with Fox, including "Bright Eyes" (1934) alongside Shirley Temple and "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" (1945) for which he won the Academy Ward for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
