Under an assumed name she boards a ship traveling to America to meet her father, whom she has not seen in five years. Her cabin-mate turns out to be a worldly, well-traveled, middle aged, wealthy widow ---Mrs. Beggarstaff. Brought into her companion’s circle of friends also on board, Lydia is shocked to encounter her father which causes her true identity to be revealed. She is further astounded to find he is engaged to marry a beautiful and wealthy young widow not many years older than his daughter. Later he confides to Lydia that he is a member of the British secret service. But a cloud of doubt seems to hang over him which turns to suspicion when his fiancé’s valuable necklace is found to be a fake.
