"Slow Waltz" opens with a tongue-in-cheek introductory explanation of the dos-a-dos binding, citing John Carter's "ABC for Book Collectors," which begins "The twin volumes are usually two small service books or works of piety." Savage promises "These books are neither 'small service' nor 'works of piety.' I understand that a similar binding practice has been utilized for certain detective novels.
