New York: Boni and Liveright. Very Good+. (c.1926, 1923). Later Printing. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [good sound copy, modest wear to extremities, slight bump to lower right corner of front cover]. A 1926 printing of Dreiser's second novel, first published in 1911, about a woman who bears the illegitimate child of a U.S. Senator (who dies before the child's birth), then has to make the best of her life going forward -- which she does, although things don't end well. It was filmed by Paramount in 1933, with Sylvia Sidney in the title role. The Boni & Liveright imprint on this copy, plus the listing of "An American Tragedy" as Dreiser's most recent book in the front of the volume, dates this particular printing as 1926. (B&L, Dreiser's publisher from 1918, had taken over the rights -- and bought the plates -- to his earlier books in 1923, and reprinted them throughout the remainder of the decade; most copies in the marketplace currently, however, bear the Horace Liveright, Inc. imprint, which dates them as no earlier than mid-1928, at which time the firm changed its name. Or, to put it another way: any copy you see for sale described as "Horace Liveright, 1926" has been mis-dated by its seller.) .
