[Massachusetts: ca 1870]. Original postal envelope, 3" x 5-1/4". Postally used, with Charlestown, MA cancellation and cancelled 3¢ stamp affixed to recto. Addressed to Warren, presumably in Linton's hand, in blue ink; Linton's name written, likely in a secretary's hand, below address. Light soil and wear; Very Good. Envelope only; no contents are present.
The envelope bears the printed motto "Rational Money," with the following caption text: "The Rational or Equitable Money consists of Notes representing Labor as bank notes [are] used to represent metals. Every Man, Woman and Child who does any thing useful, becomes his or her own banker; TIME being the banking capital. For particulars see a work entitled True Civilization."
The American monetary reformer Edward D. Linton was one of the original members of Warren's Modern Times Colony, and remained a close friend, even serving as a caretaker in the final few years of Warren's life (see Baillie, Josiah Warren: the First Anarchist, Boston:1906). This printed postal cover, promoting Warren's short-lived system of Labor Currency, is very scarce – we have never seen another in the marketplace – and this example is notable for being addressed to Warren himself.
