Boston: Lee and Shepard, Publishers, 1885. Fifth edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 309pp. Small octavo [19.5cm]. Brown cloth over boards. Title and decoration stamped in black and gilt on spine and front board. Mild bumping to extremities. Textblock a bit toned. Hinges beginning to weaken. Meta Lander was an advocate of the emerging temperance movement. Though this book focuses on the consequences of tobacco use, she states " I desire to say that, while I have taken tobacco for my text, I have included all other narcotics."
Though penned in a bygone era (doctors still prescribed tobacco for multiple ailments) many of Lander's criticisms are backed by modern medicine. Others have not stood the test of time.
