Schaak was a colleague of the officer who led the police into the gathered crowd--striking for an eight-hour workday--at Haymarket Square, Inspector John Bonfield. Both were later dismissed following a corruption investigation which uncovered perjured testimony by police witnesses and jury rigging by the prosecution.
