Bunnell (1824-1903) was a member of the Mariposa Battalion, famous as the first non-indigenous group to enter Yosemite Valley (where they burned Native American villages and forcibly relocated the inhabitants). Bunnell's book describes the discovery of an iconic American landmark, and one episode in what is sometimes called the California genocide. This copy is inscribed by Bunnell to a fellow soldier.
