By PUBLILIUS SYRUS
Patavii [Passau]: Josephus Cominus, 1740. Octavo (19cm). Undyed cartonnage with brief manuscript title to spine; 80pp; title page vignette, printer's device to colophon. Untrimmed. 8vo: A-E8. Minor external rubbing and wear, with splits and losses to paper over spine, internally clean and bright: Very Good.

The sayings of Roman playwright Publilius Syrus; though his mimes were popular, and he was famous as an improviser, all that remains of Syrus' plays is this collection of moral maxims or sententiae. This edition was printed in very small numbers, according to Brunet, who noted that it was one of the rarest of the Latin imprints issued by Italian publisher Josephus Cominus. Apparently a rarity in the trade; we have traced only one copy in the auction record. BRUNET V.616. [63025].
