New York: Harper & Brothers, 1845. Cloth. Very Good. The uncommon 1845 1st edition of this early examination of moral instruction in American education. 16mo, 164 pgs. of text plus a lengthy list of Harper & Brothers recent titles in theology and travel. Tight and VG in its dark-green cloth, with bright gilt-titling along the front panel. A degree of forgiveable spotting and soiling to the panels, offsetting at the pastedowns and endsheets. Written in pencil on the front pastedown in a former owner's (or bookseller's) hand is the following description: "an early plea & plan (an appendix) to adopt a national system of schools & education in the U.S. (especially Indiana + Ohio"). Includes letters from Henry Beecher and other leading theologians of the day, beseeching women to teach the country's young in principled, moral ways.
