Includes the bookplate of Swansea Training College on fep; autography of Moses Newton on ffep. Swansea Training College formed part of the West Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education (now Swansea Institute of Higher Education). Moses Newton, a younger brother of James H., was born in Hubbardston, Mass., Oct. 27, 1833. He lived on his father's farm until fourteen years of age, receiving his education in the schools of that town and at Deerfield Academy. He remained on the farm until past thirty years of age, being engaged, however, with his father and brothers in the lumbering business, when he removed to Holyoke, where he engaged in the paper-business as superintendent of the Hampden Paper Company, until it was destroyed by fire in the year 1870. In the year 1877, he organized the Newton Paper Company, for the purpose of manufacturing building, carpet lining, and wrapp.ing papers. Connection to Sir Isaac Newton is unclear. Previously owned by Oliver Sacks.

Moderate cracking to hinges (front and back), with exposed netting, pages/boards remain attached. Light to moderate spotting, and foxing throughout. Boards with shelf-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces with crushing to spine ends, loose spines, and discoloration of text block, marks. Full bound brown cloth with stamped decorative boards/spine with gilt titling. Includes frontispieces. 8vo, 478 and 564 pp. respectively, (b/w illus), plates. Inscribed by former owner(s). Ex-library with markings, labels.
