[LITERATURE] POEMS [2 VOLUMES]
- Hard Cover
- New York: D. Appleton & Company, 1855
New York: D. Appleton & Company, 1855. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Two 8vo volumes, in brown embossed cloth; [i] - [xii], [1] - 296 pages; [i] - [viii], [1] - 286 pages; in brown T-cloth with plain edges; not illustrated; a rather sharp copy, BUT the top 1 3/4" inches of the front endpaper of Volume I has been neatly cut out. There is a previous owner name on the title page of Volume I; and a previous owner gift inscription in Volume II to Charlotte Anna Perkins dated Christmas 1854.~~This is the first collected appearance of the following, all in Volume 2: "The Paradise of Tears, from German of N. Muller"; "The Lady of Castle Windeck. From the German of Chamisso"; "The Unknown Way"; "Oh Mother of a Mighty Race"; "The Land of Dreams"; "The Burial of Love"; "The May-Sun Sheds an Amber Light"; "The Voice of Autumn"; "The Conqueror's Grave".~~It is clear in the BAL that a one-volume illustrated edition was issued several weeks after this rather neat little two volume edition. Bryant, writing to Richard Henry Dana had this to say; "The illustrated edition is a subsequent affair, and, though I have as great a horror of illustrations as you have, they will, I hope, hurt nobody." (BAL I, 343-344). Very Good binding.
