Later appearance of Paine's oft-reprinted 1782 pamphlet addressed to the French Abbe Raynal, whose critical "Revolution of America" Paine considered so riddled with misconceptions that he felt compelled "to rectify them, and prevent even accidental errors intermixing with history, under the sanction of time and silence" (from his introduction, p. [iii]).
