A Letter to John Williams, Esq. M.P. In Reply to His Observations Upon the Abuses of the Court of Chancery. London: [Printed by A.J. Valpy], 1825. [445]-454 pp. Octavo (8" x 5"). Disbound in recent stiff green wrappers. Light toning, a few faint smudges to first title page, internally clean. $350. * Two pamphlets on law reform from different perspectives. The first, by Bentham, rails against a proposal by Peel to raise the salaries of police magistrates and judges on the grounds that such a measure would be costly and do nothing to increase the aptitude of those serving in those roles. It was later reprinted in his 1835 collection of essays Official Aptitude Maximized, Expense Minimized. The second, written by Sugden during his time as a barrister and chancery practitioner, defends the chancery courts from accusations of delays, incompetence and corruption. Both are extracted from Volume XXV, Number 50 of the Pamphleteer and were published separately the same year; the priority of Observations is uncertain.
