Album of sewing samples by Miss G. C. Ayres. United States, c.1900. 4to album (9.25" by 7.5"). Approx. 75 blank leaves bound in original three quarter sheep and marbled paper sides.

Contains approx. 18 sewing samples, with at least two appearing to be missing. Techniques/features include: running stitch; folding paper for narrow hem, Canvas and worsted - teaching elements of darning; sample for "object lesson on warp and woof; over banding; folding paper for wide hem; hemming; wide and narrow hem; folding paper for true ; folding paper for fell bias; fell catch-stitching; gathering and putting on a band; patching; darning on cashmere; gusset; hem stitching and three kinds of briar-stitching. Of note, some of the samples are rendered from paper rather than fabric. Each sample is affixed with a metal brad. Missing samples are buttonholes and and darning. Also includes loose sample of blind hem and fine embroidery running stitch. Interesting array of advanced techniques for more advanced seamstresses.
