The fourth of this author's half-dozen novels (all pretty scarce), before she gave up fictioning (at the suggestion of Noël Coward) and took up playwriting. The book, a "chronicle of conflicting passions, comedy, grief and sharp irony," follows the life of a young playwright from age 17 to 35, during which time he achieves success, falls in love and marries -- but then descends into bitterness when his wife's acclaim as a dress designer eclipses his own fading reputation. .
