The uncommon 1821 1st American edition, in the publisher's original full marbled calf (with the offsetting black leather spine label intact). New additions to the text, based on the 3 preceding London editions from 1811 forward. In custom terra cotta cloth box, with gilt-stamped leather spine label. Octavo, 232 pgs., 8 plates (7 with hand-colored engravings showing various forms of eye disease). Solidly VG, with the text toned with occasional light scattered foxing (not affecting legibility). Joints cracked; front inner joint tender but still holding. Significant provenance, with the book label of Harrison Horblit affixed to the first blank endsheet. Horbit (1912-1988) was one of the most recognized late 20th century collectors of rare texts. His collection was largely known for its pioneering exhibition at the Grolier Club (NY), showcasing the 100 most important books in the history of science.
