MY LIFE AS A FAKE

  • New York: Knopf, 2003
By Carey, Peter
New York: Knopf, 2003. First American edition. An Advanced Reader's Edition in illustrated (Chip Kidd designed) wrappers of this fine novel by a two-time winner of the Booker Prize. Carey mixes fact and fiction as he borrows (including some lines from the poems) from the Ern Malley affair: an Australian poetry magazine, 'Angry Penguins', published in the 40's poems and a bio all of which were part of a hoax. Moreover the publisher was charged for obscenity for the publication of the fake poems. A tale familiar to literary Australians of Carey's generation. Tail of spine bumped; minor rubbing. Near fine.
